✈️ Flights: Pay Less for the Same Seat

Do thisWhy it works
Set a price alert, don’t guessGoogle Flights, Skyscanner and KAYAK will email you when the fare for your route drops, so you book on a dip instead of a hunch.
Search the whole monthDate-grid and calendar views show the cheapest days at a glance. Shifting by a day or two is often the biggest single saving.
Book in the sweet spotRoughly 1–3 months out for domestic trips and 2–6 months for international. Last-minute deals exist but are the exception.
Check nearby airportsA secondary airport an hour away can be far cheaper. Add the transfer cost before you decide.
Price the whole trip, not the fareBudget airlines charge for bags, seats and sometimes check-in. Compare totals with the extras you’ll actually need.

🏨 Stays: Sleep Well for Less

  • Book refundable, then keep checking. Lock in a free-cancellation rate early, then re-check the price a few weeks out and rebook if it drops.
  • Stay one stop out. Places one transit stop outside the centre are usually cheaper and often quieter. Check the transit time before you book.
  • Compare the booking site with the hotel’s own site. Hotels sometimes beat booking-site prices or add perks like breakfast when you book direct.
  • Read the fee line. Resort fees, cleaning fees and city taxes can change which option is really cheapest.
  • Ask for weekly rates. Many rentals and aparthotels discount stays of 7 nights or more.

💳 Money Abroad: Stop Paying Hidden Fees

SituationCheapest move
Paying by cardUse a card with no foreign-transaction fee. Many standard cards add one to every purchase abroad.
“Pay in your home currency?”Always choose the local currency. This “dynamic currency conversion” offer is usually a worse rate than your card’s own.
Getting cashUse a bank-owned ATM and take out larger amounts less often to cut per-withdrawal fees. Skip airport exchange booths.
Multi-currency tripsA multi-currency account like Wise or Revolut lets you hold and convert currencies close to the mid-market rate.

🛡️ Protect What You’ve Already Paid For

  • Check your card’s built-in cover first. Some credit cards include trip-delay or rental-car cover when you pay with them.
  • Insure the non-refundable part. Travel insurance is most worth it when you have big non-refundable costs or are travelling somewhere medical care is expensive.
  • Screenshot every confirmation. Keep offline copies of bookings, policy numbers and emergency contacts.

⚠️ 5 Mistakes That Cost Travellers the Most

  1. Booking the first fare you see. Without an alert or a date-grid check you have no idea whether it’s a good price.
  2. Accepting the home-currency conversion at the card machine. It feels convenient, but the rate is usually worse.
  3. Forgetting bag and seat fees. A “cheap” budget-airline fare can end up more expensive than a full-service ticket.
  4. Booking non-refundable stays too early. You lose the chance to rebook when prices drop or plans change.
  5. Using a card that charges foreign-transaction fees. It’s a small percentage on every single purchase, and it adds up fast over a whole trip.
